About Us

About us

My name is Jolanda Achterberg together with my husband Marcel Achterberg we breed Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers since 2006 under the kennel name "Canna Dea’s".

Our love for the Toller came since the purchase of our first Toller Brennan in 1997, and has grown into a true passion. After our second male Kelvin, we decided to import a lady Toller from Norway. We now have three Ladies named Marit, Frida
and Izzy.
Marit gave birth to three litters one in 2006, 2008 and 2010 and is now retired. Frida gave us tree litters in the spring of 2012 and 2014 and december 2015 and is now retired.
Izzy gave birth to her first litter spring 2015.

What is important for our breeding programm?

Health and character are the most important things for us in breeding. We use the newest insights and techniques used to test for genetic disorders, without loosing the importance of the individual dog or whole population. Genetic testing (also called DNA-based tests) makes it possible to, keep as many dogs as possible within the population and keep as many diversity as possible.

* DNA prcd-PRA
* DNA CEA/ch
* DNA CP1 (cleft palate)
* DNA CLPS (Cleft Lip/Palate and Syndactyly)
* DNA JADD (Juvinile Addison)
* DNA DE(N) (Degenerative Encephalopathy)
* DNA Dilute (Buff)
* Livershunt (ammonia tolerance test)

In addition to the DNA tests, we have our dogs screened for HD and ED by x-rays officialy done by the "Raad van Beheer" GGW department.
And a periodic eye-test on hereditary eye diseases (including gonioscopy), by a specialist in ophthalmology in Netherlands (NL-spec.)
or also as a European Specialist (Diplomate, Dip. ECVO).

In addition to occasional litter breeding we are working actively with our dogs, mainly in the field, retrieving sports, dummytraining, KNJV

Optimal socialization

If you are considering purchasing a Toller, consider a waiting list. We don't breed often (one litter in two years) We ensure that each litter
gets our full attention and that the puppies are socialized optimally. Our pups are always born in the living room and grown there too.

What we ask from you?

We find it very important that our puppies 'end up in a good place'. That is why we always want to meet with our prospective buyers personally first before we place them on the waiting list.
So if you are interested in a puppy from our kennel, please contact us for an appointment. So We can take the time to provide you with information about this special breed, and to answer your questions.

We prefer people who want to work with the dog, preferably hunting training but this can be another dog sport too where the Toller gets mental and physical activities.

We do not sell to people who work full time, dog walking service is not a suitable solution for us. The first two years are very important for raising the puppy and requires sufficient Qtytime available.

The message is 'do not take dog', unless you have at least two hours of your time daily for your dog, and have enought financial space for your dog. And the dog will not be left alone longer than six hours a day.
